University of Göttingen
Founded in 1737, Georg-August University Göttingen is one of Germany’s leading research universities. An internationally renowned university, the University of Göttingen is ranked 130th in the “World University Rankings” (see University Rating Agencies and Their Importance). The school is very popular not only internationally but also within Germany. According to student evaluations, it is ranked 4th among the top 10 best universities to study at in Germany. The school is especially popular with Chinese students.
The school is a leader in physics research and has direct links with more than 40 Nobel Prize winners, including physicists Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, Max Planck and Otto Stern. In addition to physics, the school is also very strong in the social sciences, producing internationally renowned figures such as the Brothers Grimm, Otto von Bismarck, Arthur Schopenhauer, Heinrich Heine and Max Weber.
I mentioned in my article about the city that it is a university city. Göttingen has the decisive advantage of being a small city. Instead of driving an hour every day to go to school like in big cities, you can spend your time on other things. You can reach everything by bike in 15 minutes. The university campus is 5 minutes from the city center. As such, it doesn’t really matter where you live in the city.
One day when I was in Göttingen, I saw a group of young people sitting in a decorated car pulled by hand and giving flowers around and I couldn’t make much sense of it. Later I learned that it was a tradition for those who completed their doctoral studies at Göttingen University to travel around in this car and leave flowers on the statue of the girl in the square and kiss this girl.
It is quite customary for students in Germany to study while eating. Many of the university cafeterias across the country have been designed to emphasize studying and provide a comfortable working environment rather than serving delicious food. After boring lectures, students are less enthusiastic about going to equally boring cafeterias. The University of Göttingen realizes this and has six cafeterias that serve delicious food and are famous all over the country. So you won’t go hungry if you study here.
About 12% of the university’s enrolled students are foreigners and, as I mentioned before, the Chinese are in the first place. The university cooperates with about 350 international universities and sends its students to every continent of the world for short-term education.
