LMU Munich
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
LMU Munich, also known as Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, is a highly respected research university in Germany. It is ranked among the best universities in Germany and Europe and is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany. It is also a member of the prestigious European research network “Association of European Research Universities”.
The school has a reputation among German students as the “Party School”. The extracurricular activities and events on campus are renowned throughout the country. But in general, German universities are known for their academic rigor and LMU Munich is no exception. While there are some social and extracurricular activities on campus, it is emphasized that the primary focus is on academic excellence and research.
The school is spread across several campuses located in different parts of the city. There is a very close collaboration with the city’s other major university, TUM (see Technische Universität München), and some departments run joint programs with TUM, taking some courses at TUM. Some students find this fun and instructive, others find it annoying. I guess the fact that the city is big and traveling between campuses is time-consuming is a factor.
One of the least of your worries at German universities is the qualified academic staff. At LMU, you will be welcomed by an academic staff that is highly specialized in their field and conducting cutting-edge research projects. Of course, these wonderful professors will also have high expectations of you when you take your classes. They will give you a lot of content, assignments and research topics in each class and expect you to absorb it in a short period of time, which will put a lot of pressure on you.
I always say that university life in Germany is extremely challenging. But in some schools it is extra challenging. LMU is one of them. Despite the difficulties of school and living in Munich (See: Studying in Munich), the opportunities the city offers to gain professional experience and the diversity of companies and institutions should be considered as an advantage.
